Gluten-Free Tips

Even though I am gluten-free (celiac disease) and my husband is [definitely] not, I never prepare two separate meals. He generally eats the same meals as me. He likes to have "his" spaghetti noodles, so for spaghetti, we cook separate noodles. If he wants bread, he gets out his own bread to go with the meal. He doesn't like gluten-free pancakes, so we each make our own pancakes (that's where our nice big griddle comes in handy!).

Last month, I made non-GF Butterhorns (like crescent rolls). I made the dough, rolled it, and froze the rolls. Then, I just pulled out one or two rolls at a time for him to have with dinner on a given night. He really liked the rolls, so I am planning on making another batch of dough this week for him. I made a gluten-free version, but they weren't amazing - just OK. Have to keep working on that one...

My husband had never heard of celiac disease and eating gluten-free before he met me several years ago, but he's learned a lot. I have turned him into a label reader! He's very careful about cross-contamination. (We even have a 4 slot toaster - 2 slots for him and 2 slots for me, marked with a sticker! :)) Really, having one GF person and one non-GF person in our house isn't too difficult - we have both learned what adaptations need to be made!

Every family is different, so it's important to figure out what works for you individually!
